Family Members of Those Affected Most Comment on Violence in Norristown

Byron Brown, brother of Paul Brown, and Darchelle Pierce, mother of Brandon Pierce, talk about the culture of violence on the streets of Norristown.

Philly.com on Saturday featured a story about the recent violence plaguing Norristown. Byron Brown, the brother of Paul Brown, who was murdered on Christmas Day in Norristown, and Darchelle Pierce, the mother of Brandon Pierce, who was convicted of the murder of 16-year-old Dominique Devlin in 2011, spoke about the what drives young men to a culture of street violence. "Imagine a bunch of poor people who will do anything – who will steal, will kill, will sell their bodies, will sell drugs – to change their situation," Byron told Inquirer staff writer Carolyn Davis. "But the sad thing about it is, you go through every day, every week, every month, doing the same exact thing, and you really ain't changing your situation." How To Survive A Mass Shooting

If you can run, run. If you can't run, hide. If you have to, fight.

The recent mass shooting incidents at Connecticut elementary school, a Colorado movie theater, and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, among other places, have made a once-unlikely question relevant: What should you do if someone comes into your workplace, school, or public venue and starts randomly shooting at people? The three-part answer, according to the Department of Homeland Security, is Run, Hide, Fight. If you can get out of the building or the vicinity of the shooter, do so. If you can't, hide. If you can't run or hide, as a last resort, resolve to incapacitate the shooter through any means necessary. The video above, produced last summer by the City of Houston (Tx.) Mayor's Office, was shared by the Limerick Township Police Department on…

Erin, on average only 50 people /year are hit by lightening. That you know multiple people is newsworthy indeed. I can't find a average for mass-shooting/year, but just looking at only the last 20 years, it must be a very small number.   more ›

According to Norristown Police Chief Russell Bono, the show of force is all part of a new effort he has been working on with other county and state authorities. "[We] call it the 'Aggressive Enforcement Unit,'" said Chief Bono. UPDATE: Police: Victim 'Not Cooperating' in Drive-By Shooting Investigation

At least one man in his early 20s is reportedly injured and has been flown by medevac to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.

UPDATE: [1/4/13; 9:15 a.m.] Authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting in the area of West Oak and Kohn streets in Norristown Thursday night that sent one man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his stomach area, but say the victim is not cooperating with their investigation. "[The victim] is not cooperating," said Corporal Adam Schurr, a detective with the Norristown Police Department. "He refused to give any information to police on the scene." Cpl.
