Montco Mommy

Montco Mommy Welcomes a New 'Queen of Diamonds'

The smallest in the family has taken to the field.

She picked out a pink bat. She has a pink helmet, complete with sparkles that match the facemask. It all fits neatly into her pink Louisville Slugger bat bag. She’s ready for the big leagues. I’m talking, however, of my 5-year-old daughter. She is about to embark on her very first season of t-ball as part of the Audubon Recreation Association’s (ARA) spring league. She is playing in the “Girls’ Softball 6U” team, meaning those 6 and under. She is almost a foot smaller than every other girl out there. But, what she lacks in athletic skill, she makes up for in enthusiasm. It is still unclear if my darling children will be as athletically inclined as their mother. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t play in college or go pro or anything, but I loved…

Obviously this is the first reading this responder has taken the time to read by Melissa. They need to be seasoned and realize that this lets us reflect what we have already encountered with our children. Don't take it to heart keep writing all these amusing tales. I can't help to think what the responder would have said about your road trip story and car sickness! Shake it off. It takes all …   more ›

New HS Athletic Complex to Host Inaugural Game on Saturday

Norristown Area High School's new athletic complex will host its first home football game on Sept. 22.

According to The Times Herald, the new Eagles will be breaking in the new Norristown Area High School Athletic Complex with a home game against the Upper Merion Vikings on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. Tickets are only $3 for students and $5 for adults. Work on the complex is still underway and it still needs a concession stand and ticket booth, restrooms, bleachers, a sound system and lights (hence the 1 p.m. game time.) There's some temporary seating around the field, and the district is inviting spectators to BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) in the meantime.  The Herald chronicles the long, arduous road the athletic complex's realization and the district's continuing fundraising efforts to complete the project in a recent article. Great news--we can play football but we can't keep the robotics chair position. Looking forward to seeing the numbers for the new Keystone exams--too bad the state doesn't test dribbling or tackling skills. Maybe then NASD could post lots of proficient or advanced numbers. I look forward to moving from this district that sucks up taxes like water and offers little or nothing as a return.   more ›

Montco Mommy

It Costs How Much?!?

Our Montco Mommy struggles with the rising cost of children's photos.

Don’t get me wrong. I love capturing the rare moments of my children’s childhood on film. Er, should I say, on digital cards and websites. Regardless of the format, I realize that these young years are fleeting and pretty soon my husband and I will be sitting here with an empty nest wondering where all the good times have gone. While you’ve already heard my rants over the challenges of having professional portraits of your children taken, I have one more unique bit of photography frustration to vent about here – the quantity of photos a parent is bombarded with in the span of one school year and the associated costs are pretty shocking to me. I grew up with school pictures. Who didn’t? And, as much as we’d like to forget most of them, …

We Found Our Greatest Sports Fan!

The competition was stiff, but one fan's lifelong commitment was as clear as the ink on her arm.

After weeks of voting, we have a winner in our "Greatest Sports Fan" contest. It was a tough competition with some serious super fans showing off their stuff, but one fan's devotion was so clear, so beautiful, so permanent, that it was pretty clear who had won voters' hearts. Patch reader Tara Sarica submitted the winning photos of a Phillies super fan who's tattoos of Harry Kalas, the Vet, and the Philly Phanatic testify to a lifelong commitment to our Fightin' Phils. Her entry garnered more than half of the 125 votes we received in our contest. We'll be contacting Tara shortly to let her know how she can claim her prize.   Thanks to all of those who entered or voted in our contest. You're all super fans in our books.

Norristown Comedienne Has Hit With Philly Fan Video

The popular "Sh!t People Say" meme gets a Philly version courtesy of Norristown's own Katie Kohler.

According to The Times Herald, Norristown's Katie Kohler, aspiring comedienne and Eve's Lunch employee, will be joining 610 WIP Sports Radio’s Angelo Cataldi on his Tuesday morning show, thanks to "Sh!t Philly Fans Say" video on YouTube. "I’m a Philadelphia fan and have always been,” Kohler told The Herald. “Philadelphia sports is like an old friend; it’s always there, and most of the time it disappoints you, but every once in a while it comes over with a six-pack and a pizza and you’re happy it’s there." Check out the video above and tune in to 610 AM tomorrow to hear Kohler talk about the video, Philly sports and probably Norristown. Read more about Kohler and the making of the video here.

Norristown Pins = Norristown Wins!

Wrestlers use falls as favorite route to victory.

Norristown Area High School has the biggest high school mat in the state and perhaps the country. A 60 ft wide circle has a lot of room to run, but not much room to hide. For the past 10 years or so it has been affectionately known as "The Ocean.”  The 2012 Edition of the Eagles is like a group of assassins, always looking for the pin and they usually get what they want. Mix the skills with the vast open area of the “Ocean” and it spells disastrous outcomes for visiting teams.  Plymouth-Whitemarsh visited a couple of weeks ago and found the water in the “Ocean” quite rough. Norristown recorded 6 pins and 3 forfeits on the way to a 54-21 victory. It actually took longer to put the mat away than to wrestle the match. Recording wins were: …
