Theatre Horizon Offers Youth Educational Classes

Leigh Malonee, Education director at Theater Horizon, explains the developmental and cultural benefits of youth studying the theater arts.

Theatre Horizon, located at 401 Dekalb St. in Norristown, is offering three drama classes this spring, each designed to address the developmental needs of youth: Intro to Acting –   Sensational Storytelling –   Audition Tehnique Workshop – According to Leigh Malonee, Theatre Horizon Education director, all spring classes are currently open for registration. She added that upon opening Theatre Horizon’s new 125-seat theater in October, she is expecting to grow the theater’s classes, workshops and camps. Weed & Seed and Theatre Horizon Host 'Out of Harm's Way' for At-Risk Youth

The dramatic production and forum aimed at middle schoolers and their parents will be held Sunday, Dec. 9.

Norristown's Weed & Seed Steering Committee has partnered with Theatre Horizon to produce a community event and forum aimed at addressing risk factors faced by Norristown youth. Out of Harm's Way, an "educational production and forum aimed at reducing youth violence and risk behaviors," will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Theatre Horizon's new performance space at 401 DeKalb Street in Norristown. "The point of the event is to inform parents and to explain to them the risk factors their children are facing," Akeem Davis, the outreach coordinator for Theatre Horizon told The Times Herald. Theatre Horizon Gets $25k Grant from PNC

The grant will provide 300 free tickets for Norristown residents to attend a performance – including "How I Learned to Drive," the first production at Theatre Horizon's new home in downtown Norristown.

According to The Times Herald, the PNC Foundation will be sponsoring the grand opening season of Theatre Horizon's new 120-seat theater in the old Bell Telephone Building at 401 DeKalb Street with a $25,000 PNC Arts Alive grant. The grant will mean 300 free tickets will be made available to Norristown residents for any of the performances in the 2012-13 season, including Theatre Horizon's production of Paula Vogel's "How I Learned to Drive," opening April 5. “Art should be accessible to everyone and our sponsorship of Theatre Horizon’s season will give Norristown residents the opportunity to attend critically acclaimed live theatre right in their neighborhood,” Bill Mills, regional president of PNC for Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey …

MCCC and Theatre Horizon Present 'Pretty Fire'

The Tony Award-nominated play explores growing up in a time of racial segregation.

As part of its 25th Anniversary Lively Arts season, Montgomery County Community College has teamed with Norristown's Theatre Horizon to present two performances of Pretty Fire. Written by Tony Award nominee, actor and playwright Charlayne Woodard, Pretty Fire is a funny, human and moving presentation filled with song, stories, faith and family. Set during the time of Jim Crow segregation laws, the play provides a window for the audience to view life from the innocent perspective of a child, played by Barrymore Award winner Cathy Simpson, who somehow sees the beauty of the world as she grows up, despite the hate surrounding her. Praise for a local theater company and the capture of the shotgun robber are just a few of the stories local media outlets across the Web are covering in Norristown.

The Pottstown Mercury is covering the ongoing saga of the proposed revitalization plan for Route 422, which includes the restoration of train service along the corridor. The plan has come under great opposition from the public, as it requires drivers to foot the $750 million bill through tolls.   In the article, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission further outlines the plan with financing details, logistics and estimated numbers on potential train riders that opponents suggest have been inflated. Residents remain leery of the government's ability to guarantee the toll revenue will not be diverted to some other project.
