Citizens for a Better Norristown aims to encourage and support average citizens with little political experience who want to run for office in Norristown, East Norriton and West Norriton.
More the three dozen residents turned out for a reception at the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library on Monday evening hosted by grassroots political group Citizens for a Better Norristown (CBN). According to members of the group, the aim of the evening was to introduce average citizens to the political process and encourage residents to run for local office. "We want to see good, quality people in office," said John Milligan, an executive committee member of CBN. Piazza's inaugural bid for the Hall of Fame falls short as the Baseball Writers' Association of America fail to elect anyone on the 2013 ballot.
Long regarded as one of the best hitting catchers of all time, Mike Piazza, a Norristown native, has failed in his inaugural bid for enshrinement at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. In his first year on the ballot, Piazza received 57.8 percent of the vote, which is 98 votes shy of the 75 percent requirement for election, according to the New York Times. Piazza wasn't alone, though, as voters with the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) failed to elect anyone on the 2013 ballot, which featured other big names including Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and Jeff Bagwell. Norristown Patch visited election polls all over Norristown and West Norriton today and despite some long lines and a heated debate or two, folks are happy with how this election day turned out.
As contentious as this election cycle has been this time around, I half expected that my tour of polling places today would be fraught with battling poll watchers and political ideologues at each others' throats. I'm happy to say it was, in fact, downright delightful. I missed most of the longer lines of the early morning, but poll workers were pleased to tell me all about it and how smoothly it was going – except for a few isolated incidents. It turns out earlier in the morning (probably before folks had a chance to have their coffee and were a bit cranky), the political discourse got a bit heated over at the Stewart Middle School poll and some harsh words were exchanged. I certainly hope we have some diverse, well qualified candidates run in Norristown. I would be behind them 100%. I'm not sure who would want to spend all of this time running for office but I remain hopeful of good candidates coming forward.   more ›
