Squibb Upset in Second Straight Wing Bowl Defeat

Connecticut's James "The Bear" McDonald pulls out a narrow victory over the three-time champ.

Philadelphia's championship drought has spread to yet another sport: New Englander James "The Bear" McDonald pulled off an upset victory in Wing Bowl 21, edging three-time champ Jonathan “Super” Squibb to take the title. One of five out-of-town ringers brought in to challenge Squibb, McDonald lived up to his bidding as the 2012 All Pro Eating Rookie of the Year and fulfilled his prediction he would out-eat Squibb for the title. “This wasn’t necessarily as intimidating as I thought, but the final result was a lot closer than I thought it would be,” McDonald said amid a rain of boos from a drunkenly partisan crowd. “I had to really push it.” McDonald built a slim lead heading into the finals and held off Squibb and Dave “U.S. Male” Goldstein…

Kobayashi Sets Wing Bowl Record

Wing Bowl 20 came and went on Friday - that's how fast it was. It truly felt like a whirlwind. Having never been to a Wing Bowl before, I didn't really know what to expect. So I did some research. Let's just say it's not the classiest of events Philadelphia has to offer, checking out a recap of last year's Wing Bowl. But then again, the contest was founded upon a unique principle, one very close to Philadelphia sports fans' hearts: "We didn't make it to the Super Bowl (again), so let's ease our minds with one big party." And it is a party. The eating contest itself was very fun and exciting, and this year's winner has become a "household" name in competitive eating: Takeru Kobayashi. Sports writers flock to Willow Grove

Tonight's event ideal for the sports fan in the house

More than 15 sports writers and broadcasters from around the area will stage a mass book signing tonight at 7 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble in Willow Grove, featuring appearances by WIP's Reuben Frank and Glen Macnow, ESPN's Sal Paolantonio and Jayson Stark, Ray Didinger, Merrill Reese and many other local writers and radio personalities. "It's great because people can come by and pick up 10 signed sports books and knock out their holiday shopping for all their sports-obsessed friends and family at the same time," said Reuben Frank, during an interview with Patch.  "It's a lot of fun, and a great chance to meet local radio and television personalities."
