Weed & Seed and Theatre Horizon Host 'Out of Harm's Way' for At-Risk Youth

The dramatic production and forum aimed at middle schoolers and their parents will be held Sunday, Dec. 9.

Norristown's Weed & Seed Steering Committee has partnered with Theatre Horizon to produce a community event and forum aimed at addressing risk factors faced by Norristown youth. Out of Harm's Way, an "educational production and forum aimed at reducing youth violence and risk behaviors," will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Theatre Horizon's new performance space at 401 DeKalb Street in Norristown. "The point of the event is to inform parents and to explain to them the risk factors their children are facing," Akeem Davis, the outreach coordinator for Theatre Horizon told The Times Herald. Weed & Seed Hosting 'Cops and Youth Forum' on Saturday

The forum on reducing disproportionate minority contact with law enforcement is intended to be a "frank discussion" between youth and police.

Norristown's Weed & Seed Steering Committee is hoping to address violence in the Norristown community with a "Cops and Youth Forum" this Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gotwals Elementary School at 1 East Oak Street. According to Norristown Councilman Marlon Milner, the forum is designed to be a place "where teens and cops will sit down and have frank discussions with one another." Teens ages 12 to 18 are invited to attend and share real feelings about law enforcement officers and for police to listen and respond to what teens have to say. Weed & Seed Hosts Two-Day Violence Prevention Workshop

Norristown Weed & Seed welcomes national youth violence prevention and community empowerment expert, Reverend Jeffrey Brown, for free community workshops and training on Thursday and Friday.

The Norristown Weed & Seed Steering Committee is hosting a free two-day workshop on capacity-building for Norristown community leaders and residents this Thursday, Nov. 1 and Friday, Nov. 2. The workshops, designed to aid community leaders and Norristown Weed & Seed members enact community violence prevention efforts in Norristown, is being conducted by Rev. Jeffrey Brown. Rev. Brown is the founder of Rebuilding Every City Around Peace (RECAP), a national initiative to combat gang violence, and co-founder of the Boston TenPoint Coalition, a group organized to adress issues faced by black and Latino youth. Weed & Seed Hosting Public Meeting on Youth Violence Tonight

Norristown's Weed & Seed program has opened up its facilitator training session at the Norristown Public Library tonight to the public in response to recent rise in violence in our community.

Norristown's Weed & Seed Steering Committee had originally scheduled a training session for its facilitators tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library, but after recent violent incidents in the community involving young people, organizers have decided to invite the public to join them and learn more about how they help. "There is a lot of anti-social youth behavior going on," Weed and Seed Chairwoman Rochelle Culbreath told The Times Herald. "People are interested in finding out how they can help. Some people want to get involved." Consultants, governments, non-profits and other service providers interested in working with Weed & Seed should submit proposals soon.

The steering committee for the Norristown Weed & Seed program is still accepting applications from consultants, governments, non-profits and other service providers who are interested in working with Weed & Seed to further the goals and objectives of the initiative. They have pushed the deadline for for people wishing to submit a proposal back to June 4. Norristown Weed & Seed was successful in securing the remaining $27,000 in funding from the state sponsored program that was cut in 2011. That funding will pay for three programs – a parent-oriented support program, a police and youth forum and a capacity-building program for Weed & Seed committee members – and a site coordinator position. Weed & Seed Committee Gets Last of State Grant

Rochelle Griffin-Culbreath, chair of the Weed & Seed Steering Committee joined Councilman Marlon Millner in announcing the $27,000 grant.

Though the Weed & Seed program that had brought nearly $2 million dollars to Norristown in the last ten years was cut last year in Gov. Corbett's budget, there was still $27,000 left in available state funds. Norristown's Weed & Seed Steering Committee managed to secure those funds and plan to use the grant for programs designed to curb youth violence and proved life skills training for families in crisis. The money would also pay for capacity building and training for community leaders to empower them to secure further grants and support for programs.
