Norristown Celebrates Mexican Independence This Saturday

A festival of food, music and family fun will kick off at noon this Saturday at the Astor Shopping Center.

As part of the continuing Norristown Bicentennial Celebration, the municipality will host the Festival del Grito de la Independencia de Mexico, commemorating Mexico’s independence from Spain this Saturday, September 15, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Astor Shopping Center on Markley Street, across from Studio Centre. Festival goers will have a chance to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, a Mariachi group and other local musical artists, a health pavilion, arts and culture, street performers, games, prizes and more. The festival will also include live music from popular latino bands Alvaro el Plebe y los Konpaz de Guerrero, Agustin Mariche and Los Brazeros Musical de Durango.   "I am deeply honored by the fact that we will be remembering our …

The Rotary presented a check for $3500 to the Bicentennial Committee at last week's council meeting.

Norristown's Bicentennial on FYI Philly

Channel 6 ABC's weekend program featured a trio of local notables touting Norristown's Bicentennial Cookbook!

In case you missed it when it aired this past Saturday, July 14, here's the video of Channel 6 ABC's program FYI Philly featuring Keith Taylor, owner and head chef of Zachary's BBQ; Sandy Grubb, Norisstown's municipal administrative assistant; and Lil Gambone, who recently retired from municipal work.  The trio were touting Norristown's Bicentennial Cookbook – a labor of love for both Grubb and Gambone – and showing off Norristown's chops in the kitchen. Gospel, Jazz & Blues Festival at Elmwood Park This Saturday

Norristown's Bicentennial Celebration continues with this tribute to Thomas A. Dorsey, the “Father of Gospel.”

According to a release issued by The Living Ground Ministries (TLG), to help celebrate Norristown’s Bicentennial, TLG and the Greater Norristown Area Ministerium are assembling a 200-person mass choir for a Gospel, Jazz & Blues Festival at the Fire Chief's Band Shell in Elmwood Park on Saturday, June, 23. from noon to 6 p.m. The musical line up will feature a collection of voices from the diverse community of the greater Norristown area. In addition, the Community Jazz School from Trappe will perform selections composed by Thomas A. Dorsey, known throughout the world as the "Father of Gospel." Norristown Native Jerry Spinelli's 'Maniac Magee' Comes to Life on Saturday

Local children will stage scenes from the award-winning children's book at Elmwood Park.

According to a release issued by the Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau, twenty Norristown-area middle-schoolers will be bringing award-winning author and Norristown native Jerry Spinelli’s 11-year-old wonder boy "Maniac Magee" to life Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Elmwood Park. The School Library Journal recently named the book #40 in its list of "Top 100 Children's Novels." Scenes from his award-winning children’s parable about racism and ignorance will be staged throughout the park in Norristown, where the author lived as a child and upon which the fictional town of Two Mills is based.  Spinelli will be at the Fire Cheif's Bandshell taking questions and signing books at 2 p.m. Local dignitaries, including …

Norristown's International Festival Takes Over Marshal Street This Saturday!

The Greater Norristown Hispanic Business Association is hosting the day of music, dance, food and more as part of Norristown's Bicentennial Celebration.

Tomorrow, West Marshall Street between Astor Street and Haws Avenue will be alive with music, dance, multicultural foods and more during the Greater Norristown Hispanic Business Association’s (GNHBA) inaugural International Festival from noon to 6 p.m. “We have very nice diversity here in Norristown, and this festival, which we intend to celebrate annually, is an opportunity to share our cultures, traditions and cuisines,” said Beatrice Nunez, president of the Greater Norristown Hispanic Business Association, in a release about the festival.
